How to Get Your Driver’s License in British Columbia

Step 1: Getting Your Learner’s (L) License

The first step in driving is obtaining your Learner’s (L) license.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be at least 16 years old.

• Pass a vision test.

• Pass knowledge test covering road signs, traffic rules, and safe driving practices.

• If you’re under 19, a parent or guardian’s consent is required.

Preparing for the Knowledge Test

• Study the Learn to Drive Smart Manual, available online or in print.

• Take practice tests online to identify areas for improvement.

Taking the Knowledge Test

• Book your test at a driver licensing office.

• The test has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you must score at least 40 to pass.

Learner’s License Restrictions

• Drive only with a supervising driver aged 25+ who has a valid license.

• Display a visible “L” sign on your vehicle.

No electronic devices while driving.

• Limit passengers: one non-family passenger unless accompanied by a qualified supervisor.

• Maintain a zero blood alcohol level.

• No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.

• With your L license, you can start gaining real driving experience under supervision.

Step 2: Getting Your Novice (N) License

After holding your L license for at least 12 months, you can apply for your Novice (N) license by passing the Class 7 road test.

N License Restrictions

• Display a visible “N” sign on your vehicle.

• Maintain zero blood alcohol while driving.

• Limit passengers to one non-family member unless a supervising driver is present.

No handheld electronic devices while driving.

Preparing for the Class 7 Road Test

• Gain as much driving experience as possible in varied conditions: city streets, highways, parking lots, and different weather.

• Consider professional driving lessons with a certified ICBC driving instructor.

• Practice parking, reversing, lane changes, and merging.

• Take a mock road test to become familiar with the testing format.

Retake Policy

• 1st attempt: wait 14 days if you fail

• 2nd attempt: wait 30 days

• 3rd+ attempt: wait 60 days

• Each retake requires paying the road test fee.

After holding your L license for at least 12 months, you can apply for your Novice (N) license by passing the Class 7 road test.
